Initial situation
The Zug library was faced with the challenge of offering its users more flexibility and longer access times without having to hire additional staff. Many users wanted extended opening hours that went beyond the regular operating hours.
Use of our solution
To meet users' needs for more flexibility, Zug Library introduced an advanced electronic access system, supported by the eZug app. The "open library" function in the eZug app allows users to enter the library independently during extended opening hours. Access is controlled via a digital library card or the eZug app, which includes a secure QR code scanner for access. This allows users to browse through the books outside of regular opening hours.
In addition to physical access control, the eZug app offers the option of using the digital library card on a smartphone at any time. Users can conveniently reserve books and digital media, borrow them directly or collect them on site without having to carry a physical card. This makes carrying a physical wallet obsolete and enables spontaneous use of library services.
Result
Since the introduction of the new access system, Zug Library has seen significant improvements in user satisfaction and accessibility. Users - particularly working professionals and students - have benefited from being able to use the library before 9am, after 7pm and late on Saturday evenings. The extended opening hours have led to increased use of library resources, including lending, returns and the use of printers/ scanners. The flexible access solution has enabled the library to improve its service without significantly increasing operating costs.
