Starting point and challenge
With 19,000 employees, the Swisscom Group is one of the largest employers in Switzerland. It offers special conditions not only for its own employees, but also for those of partner companies when purchasing smartphones and signing contracts. Proof of affiliation with Swisscom or a partner company must be provided. Due to a provision in the Telecommunications Act, proof of identity must also be provided when concluding new contracts for smartphones. It is currently difficult and time-consuming to provide these proofs.
PoC setup and how our solution works
This use case combines a verifiable credential (VC) from the private sector (the employee confirmation) and a VC from the public sector (the E-ID). The PoC took place in collaboration with Orell Füssli, Swisscom, AXA and SBB. Using the Procivis software, these employers can issue their employees a VC that confirms their status as an employee. In addition, the type of contract (permanent, temporary), the status (not terminated, terminated), the workload, the role or the salary can be included as attributes in the certificate.
In future, employees of Swisscom or a partner company will be asked to provide a digital credential when purchasing a smartphone in the Swisscom online store. They scan the QR code and see a display showing which attributes from which digital credentials are required (employee status from the employee confirmation, first name, surname and date of birth from the E-ID). The employee confirms the sharing of the attributes with the Swisscom online store. After successful automated verification of the verifiable credentials, the corresponding discount is deducted directly from the purchase price.
Result and outlook
The PoC has shown how discounts for own employees or employees of partner companies can be easily integrated into the ordering process. Confirmation of employee status and identity can be automatically integrated into the purchasing process. Manual processes, paper confirmations and waiting times are a thing of the past. The benefits are time and cost savings for Swisscom and a positive customer experience for the employees of partner companies.
